yeah, look up Jeff Silberman is a start, also Barry Glassberg are two tapers that come to mind....you want to look for FOB PCM (pulse code modulation) this is the pre-cursor to DAT...it was a betamax video machine that encoded it's audio 14 bit digital...not the greatest resolution but no hiss and was able to capture phil bombs without saturation...also look up Jim Wise who recorded alot of very consistently using sennhieser 421 microphones...I just went through my GD CDR collection and I've got about 5 - 10 shows that are not on archive.org that are killer aud's that I transferred from DAT to CDR myself...so hopefully I can figure out how to encode this stuff to upload it...I've been having a hell of time learning how to encode...decode is easy...

a couple of shows that come to mind:

04-21-84
08-06-71
09-03-83
10-14-83
05-14-83
07-02, 03-88
10-14-84 FOB Nak 300's xy
07-29-88
06-23-90
Austin, Tx. 83 FOB PCM

also you want to look for AMS-ST250 microphone...it's a 10,000.00 dollar mic set up that I believe came on the scene in late 92...incredibly accurate sound; however, they ran it upfront so sometimes there's a bit of crowd noise, but it sounds realistic like you're at the show

the Louisville 93 shows with the AMS-ST250 is killer...I specifically remember talking to healy at that show, and he loved freedom hall becuase "we can make it sound so good" in fact, when you listen to it...during space on the 16th , you can hear osciallating "pink noise" like crickets through the PA , it was really something never heard that before....

also, if you can find the Bear aud's from the soundboard with Shure SM57's..from 1972 in the fall, they are really good too, they demonstrate how good the PA sounded back then, I've got some , but I haven't seen them up on archive.net I believe, I could be wrong...

see ya,

Donnie L.

Bear's 1972 auds....would you be referring to these?

http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-10-30.aud.cotsman.10915.sbeok.shnf
http://www.archive.org/details/gd72-11-13.aud.hanno.10089.sbeok.shnf (unfortunately the actual music was pulled - there's an alternate recording of the first set, but it's bewildering that the best Dark Star ever played is STILL not on the Archive!)

These are excellent recordings for '72; if he made others, I'd be anxious to hear!

There is also a very frustrating review here from "dewey gill" on 10/23 and 10/24 where he mentions having good AUD recordings of those shows, I wish those would show up:

thanks. i do have an awful lot of fun just roaming around stumbling on to great shows but i thought i'd see if anyone had any in particular to recommend. i'm rediscovering the magic of aud recordings. love the atmosphere. Once upon a time a handful of terribe auds was all i needed to launch me deep into other worlds.

This link goes to a long list from a couple years ago. Obviously lots of others have appeared since then, but these seem to be many of the most highly regarded AUDS:
